how to provide alert when a form field value is edited

Hi all,

I have some hyperlink in which when a item is clicked it will show a form.
Now i need to provide validation for the edited form.When the user edits some feild and clicks on any hyperlink they has to get a confirmation dialogue which should show do u want navigate or not. So am getting th eproblem of capturing the edited value. How could i capture it and how to provide the confirmation.
