Validating DateBox

i have a datebox where i want to validate user inserted values or in other words values where user typed into the datebox. When I inserted invalid data (i.e. like a string) the date box is set to a default date value something like Sep 30, 2000. I am confused on how this value is generated. And also explain how to use multiple date formats in a datebox. Waiting for a quick response. Thank You in advance :)
