I think keeping the client state in a viewmodel is a good idea. But if the user refreshs the page (e.g. hitting F5 in the browser) the state is lost since the viewmodels are recreated.

Is there a possibility to re-use viewmodels by give them another scope, for instance session scope?

If not where are you storing the client state?
