How do I change the way the CalendarEvent is rendered in the calendar?

I tried implementing my own EventRender and registering it with the Calendar by using setEventRender(EventRender), but it did not work. I set break points in the code and I could see that it was never called. I know that the setEventRender is deprecated, but how do I control the way the calendar event is rendered on the screen?

The current behaviour I am seeing is the following:

When the month view calendar renders, it is showing the content of the CalendarEvent. I thought that it would show the title instead. On the week view, it is displaying exactly how I thought it would display. The week view has a title at the top, with the content in a larger section. How do I get the title to show on the month view instead of the content?
