@ref in Java

My limited experience with ZK has shown that pretty much any functionality that can be done in xml in a .zul file can also be done with the ZK api on the Java back-end. Is there any way to apply the functionality of the @ref annotation in the Java back-end? If not, is there a way to have the Java back-end call a method on the front-end that applies the @ref? Thanks.
