dynamically placing a border around an image when image selected

I am creating a workflow type program that has images a user can drag/drop to create the workflow. I would like to paint a border around the image (which is kept in a HBOX) whenever a user selects it and remove the border (border = red rectangle) when the image is dropped. Java code example would be appreciated
